Spring Season Is Storm Season

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

We know it's officially spring, but that doesn't mean it'll always be sunny days. Spring is usually the wettest season and most temperamental when it comes to New England weather. To improve your safety in your home during a storm, you should make several preparations such as creating an emergency kit, insulating your home and protecting your heating equipment, also make sure to know how to shut off all utilities.

Here are a few suggestions on how to prep your home to effectively prevail against storms, freezing rain and chilly winds:

  • Install smoke alarms and ensure proper ventilation– take precautions since fire       hazards increase drastically when flames are burning in fireplaces and the power systems are overburdened by heaters.
  • Ensure proper drainage– have downspouts and basins clear of debris and maintain the plumbing system in perfect condition so that the water from the melting ice and snow can easily find its way out and away from your property.
  • Trim bushes and trees – if you have a yard, make sure no branches spread dangerously near the house.

Clear debris away– remove snow, ice, or even garbage from the roof to prevent collapsing and clear accrued snow away from the foundations of the house to lower the risk of flooding.
